HIGHER PAY.
RAILWAY DEMAND
FOR LINE-CLEARING. MATTER OF OVERTIME. (Uy Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") TAUMAKUXUI, this day. It is reported that unless the Railway Department agrees to an increased rate of pay about 50 casual labourers engaged in clearing debris at various points on the Stratford Main Trunk railway between the Okahukura tunnel and Oliura will not resume work on Tuesday.
Dissatisfaction at the rate of pay was expressed on Wednesday evening, when the men received their fortnightly pay, and although thev worked on Thursday the matter of having been paid less than the award rate was discussed.
Workmen waited on the district eiiQineer, Mr. J. Dow, on Thursday evening at Taumarunui, and stated that after working 40 hours they were, entitled to time and a half. This, they said, they did not receive, and their pay for 110 hours had been on a flat rate basis of '2/i\ per hour.
The engineer promised to -look into tlio matter, but the men have decided that jn the event of an increase not being made, they will not resume work at the flat rate or nay.
