CONGRESS DEMAND. Beyond Orbit Of British Imperialism. TRIUMPH FOR GAHDHL United Press Association. —Copyright. (Received 1.30 p.m.) CALCUTTA, March 20. Congress adopted, by an overwhelming majority, a resolution demanding complete independence for India beyond the orbit of British Imperialism. Rainstorms reduced the expected attendance of 100.000 to 10,000. Mahatma Gandhi triumphed over extremists in Congress in a vigorous speech, denouncing civil disobedience until his conditions of "no violence** were fulfilled. He reproached leaders of Congress for lack of discipline, without which they were certain to be defeated. He said: "I l>ave never been defeated. We must break the bonds of slavery and fight to win, but if I am to be your general you must accept my conditions." Congress rejected proposals for immediate action from the "anti-compromise" group of Congress members. Holding a rival conference a. mile away under the leadership of Subhae Bose, the anti-compromise members passed a resolution to start on April 6 in an All-India struggle to withdraw from the war and procure executive independence.
