CIVIC ADDRESS.
AUCKLAND'S GRATITUDE "CHAPTER IN NAVAL HISTORY." The pride of the City of Auckland in the Achilles' exploit was expressed in a civic address by the. town clerk, Mr. James Melling. "On your safe return to home waters from an engagement which wrote a new chapter in naval history we, the Mayor, corporation and citizens of Auckland, welcome you as conquering heroes and record our grateful appreciation of the gallant performance of your ship," said Mr. Melling. The encounter and its meritorious outcome brought home in arresting manner some idea of the monumental service the Royal Navy was performing in keeping open the trade routes of the Empire and in upholding- the traditions of those brave hearts whose stirring exploits made Britannia mistress of the seas, said Mr. Melling. "We temper our congratulations with silent tribute to those from the three ships who made the supreme sacrifice and mourn with next-of-kin their irreparable loss," he added. "We conclude in the language of our Maori people with the hope voiced in 'Ake ake kia kaha' (Forever let ui be atrong)."
