BANDS CONTEST.

SOLO EVENT WINNERS. CORNET PLATER PRAISED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. "We have had some very fine work to-night," said Mr. Frank Wright at the conclusion of yesterday's performance* in the New Zealand Centennial brass bands championships in the Wellington Town Hall. He announced the three leading bands in the A grade first test selection as St. Hilda Municipal, Timaru Municipal and Port Nicholson Silver, that, however, not necessarily being the order of merit. The final of the B grade will be heard to-night, and the final of the A grade to-morrow night. A member of tile Timaru Municipal Band, R. Thomas, who won the E flat soprano cornet solo, was described bv Mr. Wright as probably not only the best player of that instrument in New Zealand, but one of the best in any part of the world.
