The presence of the city waterworks engineer oil the Centennial executives land purchasing committee rakes the question whether it would not be desirable to secure suggestions of suitable areas to be bought from many sourees. As he naturally knows the ranges well, the committee will probably act on his recommendation in the purchase of land and bush there. There is a danger that this officer of the City Council, in his desire to supplement and protect the existing water catchment areas, will prefer acquiring land adjoining the?e reserves. While it would be advantageous to link up the reserves into a homogeneous Mock, there is a pou-i----ibility that the public wjll continue to be. excluded from these extensive area-. In order to save the waterworks department from having to buy snch land, it would be most improper to u-e for Mich a purpose any moneys contributed by the public and siil>-i<lisc<l by the <;<ueri.ment towards a Centennial project. As far as is possible, the public should have all reasonable access tn reserves thnacquired, subject to adequate .provision being made to protect the bush from damage and lire. F.G.F.
