A SMART EFFORT.

NIGHTBEAM'S FOUR. 1 GALLOPS AT ELLERSLIE. » JCo. 1 grass track, on which the poles were out 10ft, was used for fast work at Ellerslie this morning, but there was not a great deal of fast work. Silver Quex ran five furlongs easily in 1.6, while British Talent, and later Loyal Grant and Master Warden, got to the end of half a mile in 53 l-ss. Beeswing took 1.8 for five furlongs, while Kelly and Balinavar finished together over a round in 1.53 4-5. Valmint, Sigurd, Brazilian and Agog took 1.54 1-5 for a similar distance the last six fui-longs occupying 1.19 4-5. There was not a great deal between them at the end, though Valmint appeared to be going the best. Bronze Emerald and Lady Acuslila were given an easy half-mile. Sir Cameron and Right Royal jumped away at the six-furlong post and came home practically on terms in 1.19 1-5. Pasture was responsible for a good half-mile, covering the distance in 50s, while Phaleron and Rara Avis pleased by sprinting three furlongs in 375. Bambury Cross traversed five furlongs in 555, doing it easily, while Nightbeam and Llandaff covered the same ground in 48 l-5» —the best of the morning. Nightbeam finished in front, but Llandaff went over a good deal of extra ground through running wide at the turn. Wiienua was sent five furlongs, being joined by Akanora at the half-mile, from which peg they came home in 50 4-5s —a useful effort. Night Pilot and Golden Bonnet, after traversing their first furlong in 12 l-ss, recorded 49s for four furlongs—another good gallop. Night Pilot was doing it well in front. Clansman and Bide-a-wee were on terms at the end of five furlongs in 1.7.
