PROGRESS OF THE CLUB BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIPS.

(By TRUNDLER.) A fine afternoon last Saturday was tilisetl on most greens for club competiions, as there were no other very press- W ig engagements. It will be quite differ- J nt next Saturday, when the postponed b liird round of the pennant competition £ fill be played. Members would assist lieir match committees if they attend unctually, or eke give early notice if hey are unable to play. n It is very -pleasing to find that there F 5 already a full entry of 40 rinkg received < or the -benefit tournament which the St. i lelier's Club ia giving to Waimauku, the / oungest club in the Auckland centre, next ,'uesday. Nearly all the clubs in the city a nd suburbs will be represented, and there A s even a rink from Patumahoe, in charge ( •f R. S. Blown, vice-president and one ® rom Hotorua, in charge of W. A. Knaggs, ecretary. ( Auckland.—The remaining game in the eventh round of the championship was 0 ilaycd on Saturday. J. Hardie-Neil de- ' eating G. B. Osmond by 21 to 20. Osmond van unfortunate with his last bowl. Lying / he shot for a win, he tried to make the jj losition safer by getting another one in, o >ut turne<l over an opposing bowl for shot, ilthough it was fully jack-diigh, and looked a [uite 6afe. The game was a real mara- J Hon and lasted for two hours, running nto the unusual length of 33 ends. Carlton. —The really clo6e game on Sat- I irday was between D. C. Eraser and E. W. ( L'aylor, former Mount Eden members. 0 l aylov was 20 to 10 at one stage, but Q ?'raser recovered to level figures, only to ind his opponent lying the game when be lad only one bowl to go. However, he ilayed the up-shot that lias so often helped lim, and pushed out Taylor for a win. 1 they had already met in an earlier round, 1' (v-heye there was at one time a sti'll greater lisparity, Taylor being 18 to 3. Fraser aersevered uniil he reached 17, but could ;et no further, Taylor winning on that occasion. The other one-lifers also met >n Saturday, J. R. Molloy defeating E. E. Roberts. The meeting of the two-lifer» was disappointing, G. E. Kent losing his usual accuracy, and he made only 5 to J. S. Martin's 21. j Several games in the afternoon section j were played yesterday. G. A. Deare gave H. B. Jenkin his tiist loss, but the third 1 two-liftn 1 , H. C. Olaike, lost to J. Torrance. R. Higgott will play G. Harm an when the latter returns from the Rotorua pairs tournament. S. Jenkin defeated ,T. l'roud, and then lost to C. H. do Launay. For the sixth round the sections will be amalgamated, the afternoon players taking precedence, so the draw will be:—Deare v. Martin, Torrance v. the winner of Higgott and Harman, de Launay v. H. B. Jenkin, Clarke v. Molloy, Fraaer v. Kent. Epsom.—Two rounds were played on Saturday. There were three two-lifers, J. Buchan defeating T. R. George, but the remaining two-lifer, E. T. Richmond, went down to J. Goodison. C. Wallace defeated W. Coutta, and M. Fisher defeated C E. Scott. In the next round Buchan beat Wallace, and Fisher beat Richmond, the bye going to Goodison, a* George had pulled out owing to indisposition. This leaves Buchan, with two lives, to meet Goodison, while Fisher gets the bye. Hallyburton Johnstone.—The remaining game in the sixth round wa» played wi Saturday, resulting in the title-holder, IL Stepberg, who is the only two-lifer, defeating H. J. McKeown, just as he did in the final last year. It is rather an unusual coincidence that while champion he now has to meet C. M. Ardern, who won the handicap singles last year. Mount Eden.—Another round waa com* pleted on Saturday, the most spectacular game being between W. E. Taylor and the title-holder, L. N. Thomson. They were 20-all when splendid drawing aimed at getting the all-important point, Taylor beiiig alnioet on the jack, with Thomson lying two seconds, one locked to Taylor •, and the other just behind. Thomson drove, but his shot was only too accurate, for he hit Taylor's shot so sqtwely that it stayed there, locked, while both of his own went aw-ay, to leave Taylor the game. In the other games of the evening section, between the four one-liters, H. Giibble beat W. Smith, and A. Jones went down to A. E. Harland, who lost to A. J. Letham (Ponsonby) in the centres open singles three seasons ago. In the afternoon section J. Miller beat S. Purdy as two-lifers, while W. E. Vivian eliminated E. C. Delamore; N. Gribble had already eliminated S. R. Griffiths. The sections are now amalgamated, and another round will probably be played during the week. Taylor will play Miller as two-lifers, Vivian meets H. Gribble, Holland meets X. Gribble, and Purdy meets Thomson. Oueliuiiga.—The fourth round of the evening section has been completed by A. Farnell beating R. Cross, and _C. O. West ll>eating J. D. Whitmore. This leaves N. L. Norman, the only two-lifer, to play Farnell, and West to play J. H. Mingins in the fifth round. In the fifth round of the afternoon section Livingstone had the bye, while J. Kerr defeated T. A. George, W. M. Kerns defeated L. Grace, and H. A. Robertson defeated E. V. Sutherland. The two-lifers met on Saturday, Livingstone defeating Kerr by 22 to 15. The game was far closer than the score sag* gests, for they started the last end ait 19 to 15, and Kerr was lying two splen* did shots, only an inch or two from the jack, whep Livingstone still had one bowl to go. A full bank were speculating on what shot he would play, but he decided on a run, and put the jack in the diteh, to turn two down to three up, and win. Otahuhu.—A. Murdoch, four times club champion, gave C. Loffley his first low last week, while A. Rivers eliminated J. M. Deas. This leaves Murdoch to meet Rivers, the bye going to Loffley. Remuera. —E. H. Henderson, the only two-lifer, had the bye, while T. Tudhepe

beat L. L. Macey by one point, after a tie, and W. Foubister beat W. Wwnan. Henderson now has to meet Tudhope, Foubister plays E. R- Allen, and A. B, Lawrence plays H. F, Thvopsen. Rocky Nook.—W. H. Tongue, the only two-lifer, defeated H. Cliffe, the titleholder, last evening, and now meets W. H. Keatley in the final. Te Papapa.—The position for some weeks has been T. H. Siseons, with two lives, waiting to play A. «• Osborne, * onelifer. Sissons has won the championship twice, besides being runner-up three times, and Osborne was runner-up to Alex; Moon last year, eo "there ahould be A good contret on the first fine afternoon when tney are both free. Waitemata.—J. Canty defeated J. A. Robertson, the title-holder, on Saturday, and now meets N, Swanson, who had two wins on Saturday, defeating J, Brenaan and E. W. Bilkey. A. B. Martin meets F. Fullbrook, G. Lyons getting the bye. West End—W. Bremner, five timer club champion, still hss to meet the other two-lifer, Noel Donaldson, but in lie «we round G. A. Wynyard has defeated Ale* Young. L. G. Donaldson, Bremner's brilliant lead in the recent Dominion purs, has defeated J. H. Celthurst, and A. Brown defeated A. S. Faire.
