GARDEN FAIR.

RED CROSS SOCIETY. AID FOR FINNISH REFUGEES. A successful garden fair was held under the auspices of the Red Cross Society at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elon Bond, Pere Street, Remuera, in aid of tihe funds for Finnish refugees. The delightful surroundings of the green sloping lawns from the sunken tennis court made a wonderful setting for the fair. The function was organised by the ladies of the entertainment committee, including Mrs. Heath-Preest, president; Mrs. G. Simpson, secretary, assisted by other organisations, namely: New Women's Club, Overseas League, Ladies' Auxiliary St. Andrew's Society, and Royal Society of St. George. Those in charge of stalls included: — Produce, Mrs. A. E. French, Miss A. Sutton, Mrs. H. Schmidt; ice cream and drinks, Mrs. F. A. Holding, Miss F. ! Searle, Mies J. Heath-Preest; cakes, Mrs. C. D. Simpson, Mrs. R. Matthews, Mrs. E. Archer; flowers, Mrs. W. Tongue, Miss H. Urquhart; sweets, Mrs. A. Gladding, Mrs. G. Farquharson,Mrs.G.Dyson, Mrs. R- Laing, Mrs. E. McKenzie, Mrs. H. Pickering; fancy goods, Mrs. E. Bennett, Mrs. H. Wilson, Mrs. A. Smart, Mrs. C. Wilsom; afternoon tea. Mrs. W. Wray and members of the Voluntary Aid Detaohments. The members of the Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment formed a guard of honour to receive the Mayoress, Lady Davis, who was welcomed bv the chairman of the Red Cross Society, Mr. G. T. Pater son. Lady Davis, in opening the fair, stated that the proceeds of the fair would be used to assist the women and children, the sick and needy of the Finnish nation. The people of Finland were making a wonderful stand against the invasion of their country, and, incidentally, were helping the Allies to win for all nations peace and goodwill. 'If there is any organisation that this country should take special pride in," said Lady Davis, "it is the Red Cross, for its humanitarian work for the relief of suffering is international and practically world-wide." Among those present were:, Mr. C. E. Tudehope, vice-Consul for Finland, and Mrs. Tudehope, Mrs. Murdbch-Smith, Mrs. G. T. Paterson, Mrs. G. Simpson and Miss Allikaskisvo, who was dressed in the national costume of Finland. Mr. Paterson introduced Mrs. Tudehope, who returned thanks on 'behalf of the Finnish people for the generosity of the Red Cross in organising this function.

A display of dancing was given by the >upils of Miss E. Beresford and Misses K. and I. Sheat. A gymnastic display was also given by the 13th Auckland Company of the Boys' Brigade. An orchestra, under the leadership of Miss May Beresford, played during the afternoon.
