"VICE SQUAD" BUSY.
RAIDS ON NIGHT CLUBS. CAMPAIGN IN SYDNEY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, January 18. The police "vice squad" began the New Year with a campaign against socalled night clubs, which are really only low-class sly-gTop shops and consorting places for criminals. Already nine clubsj have been closed up and the vice squad, encouraged by this success, is intensifying the campaign. The Liquor Act empowers the police to enter premises without warrant when they suspect thati liquor is being illegally sold there. Ifj the proprietor of the place is subsequently convicted in court, the liquor is confiscated and sold, the proceeds being shared by the Crown and the Police Superanuation Fund. By repeated raids the police have practically reduced sly-grop proprietors to financial ruin, compelling them to close up. Liquor has been found hidden in I recessed wall panels, reinforced ceilings, and cellars tunnelled under floors. In some raids the haul has amounted to as much as 80 dozen bottles o£ beer and mgmiU. ■ , ■ •
