Tremendous Increase In The Number Of Factories. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. British Onicinl Wireless. (Rccclv.il 1.30 p.m.) RUGBY, January 10. Speaking at the inauguration of the first area committee set up. including representatives of employers and workers, to advise the Ministry of Supply, the Admiralty and the' Air .Ministry on local matters connected with war production, Dr. Leslie Burgin, Minister of Supply, mentioned tliat in three years from 193G the number of firms engaged in munition work increased from a dozen or so to some thousand. In the field of general stores, clothing and equipment for the fighting Services, the number of firms with Government contracts three years ago was about COO, while to-day it was over 3000.
