POLYGLOT HOLLYWOOD
Hollywood has the most cosmopolitan population of any city of its size in the world. There are representatives of nearly all races and creeds, and nearly all get their living from films. They are registered with the various stuilio casting directors, who can call them up at n. minute's notice, but sometimes the demands exceeds tlio supply, as when Samuel Goldwyn required 700 Chinese for ecenes in a recent epic. His casting department liad only 20S Chinese men and 312 women on its books, but they were .ible to inako up
the deficiency witli the 07 Koreans and Indo Chinese listed as available for extra work. Later in tlie picture the casting department were asked to supply 100 Italians. This was easy, as they have 738 listed. Besides the 000 Chinese, 07 Koreans and 738 'Italians, Hollywood's army of extras includes. 93 Turks, 14 French tyi>es, 105 Russians, 110 Japanese, 197 Arabs, Egyptians, Kurds and Armenians, 300 East Indians and 17 American Indiana. According to Goldwyn's casting chief there are few Germans and Englishmen: regularly on call, as neither of these nationals stay in extra work long enough | to be permanently listed. !
