LONDON, January 18.

A U-boat torpedoed and shelled Uie Norwegian steamer Enid (1140 tons) off the north-east coast of Scotland. A trawler rescued eight of the crew, while the remaining eight landed in their own small boat.

The British steamer Cairncross (i>494 tons), struck a mine off the west coast of England in the darkness last evening. A warship picked up the crew of 48, after the seamen had spent three hours in tliei; own lifeboats.

The Greek steamer Asteria (3313 tons) sank after striking a mine in the North .Sea. Eleven of the crew and an English pilot arc feared to have been drowned. Eleven survivors and one body were landed after 15 hours in a small boat.

A Copenhagen message states that the German steamer August Thyssen (2342 tons) was sunk in a Swedish minefield off the Aaland Island*. The steamer tried to traverse the minefield without a pilot. The crew took to the boats, ami are drifting southwards through masses of broken ice. A Swedish warship is trying to reach them.

Fourteen of the crew ar o missing from <he Norwegian steamer Fagerheim (1000 tons), which was torpedoed in the Bay of Bi.-vny. The others weru picked up t.y a Greek steamer and landed at V igo, Spain, where all were sent to hospital.

Jitter Oslo reports indicate that 14 of the ckcw wen- killed. Five of the six rescued were injured.

Four of the crew of the Belgian steamer Josephine Charlotte, of 3422 tons, which struck a mine and sank off the southeast coast of England, are missing. Forty others were landed and five were sent to hospital.
