DOMINION RAILWAYS.
£340,000 GAIN FOR 36 WEEKS
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. A gain of £342,946 for the 36 weeks of the railway year to December 9, 1939, compared with the corresponding period of 1938, is ehovm in the latest accounts. A working profit of £340,690 compares with a net deficit of £2256 at the equivalent date of the previous year. For the four-weekly period to December 9 there was a profit of £91,506, compared with a net revenue of £90,265 for the I corresponding period in 1938.
The railway working account for the four weeks shows the gross receipts to have been £780,143, an increase of £15,637 on the figure of the previous year. Expenses at £688,637 were £14,396 higher.
Earnings by North Island railways were £446,398, and expenses were £374,227. On the South Island lines receipts were £236,621, and expense* were £236,617.
The total earnings for the period from April 1 to December 9 were £6,532,902. an increase of £554,703, and expenditure wtLS £6,192,212, or £221,757 higher. The net profit was £340,090, compared with a net loss of £2256 in the period from April 1 to December 10,-1938.
