GREAT FINISH.

CENTENNIAL CUP.

OLD BILL SUCCEEDS.

SPRINT TO STItRNCHASE.

(By Telegraph— Special to "Star.")

WELLINGTON, this day. In a etirring finbh for the Wellington Centennwl Cup at Trentham yesterday the favourite Old Bill, though trying to bore out , n the final furlong, 6 tayed on to hold ott a gallant three-year-old in Beau Vite °y a head.

On the day there was little between the nret pair, but possibly the younger horse wae unlucky as he just failed to get up after a torrid struggle. After the first pair there wae a m , o f three lengths back to Gladynev, who beat another three-year-old in Beau Repaire by a neck. Owned by Messre. H. H. Pharasyn ana M. Greenwood, of Hawke's Bay, who bred him and his dam before him, Old Bill js a four-year-old brown horse by Siegfried from Liaison, a Lord Quex mare. He took the ead five furlongs from home and while it looked ae though he wanted to sava-e Beau Vite in the run home he held on to win by a narrow margin. Laughing Lass eoon ran into the lead, followed .by Old Bill, Beau Vute and Z μ^k , * , whlle 9 ueen of Son s- S] y Fox .nd Mwhna were also prominent. Miehna moved up to Laughing Lass, racing past the mile post where Sly Fox received a check. Old Bill took the lead at the five luilonge and was followed to the straight by Gladynev, Raeburn, Laughing Lass, Beau Vite, Centrepmse. Beau Repaire and Globe Trotter Old Bill, when kicked up by his rider, G. R. Tattereall, looked as

though he was going to leave the field, but Beau Vite eet out after him and th'ey had the finish to themselves. Gladynev hung on to beat Beau Kepaire for third, while Thermidor, who was well back for mont of the way, put in a telling run for fifth. Then came Moorsotie, Centrepoise, Queen of Song, Norseman and Koyal Chief. The last-named was always well back in the middle of the field.

One of the features of the race wae the fact that three-year-olds filled second, third and fourth places. Siegmund, Beaupartir, Malagigi 'and Fils de Vaale were always near the tail of the field, while Willie Win was aleo aivvays well Arnck.

An inquiry into interference suffered by Beau Vite from the winner was held after the race, but after Hearing t'.ie evidence from the riders no action wae taken.

Lockit, an improving galloper, bed his fouitih win for the season in the Trenthaiu High-weight, after trailing the leader, Harina, to the straight. Trained by J. C. Tomkinsoii at Ricoarton, he has not been out of a place in his last eight starte. Thraeoe ran a solid race for second after being wit'hia challenging distance all the way, as was the third horee, White Rajah. Hitirina, tried to lead all the way, but was beaten into fourth place. Good Sun loomed up on the outside halfway down the straight, but failed to come on. Ka.lika drifted to the rear early, while 'her bracketed ma;te King's Toast was elow to move, as wei'e Haupongi and Limlbohm.

Sir Beau proved himself a class colt by the ease with which he won the Wellington Stakee. He was one of the laet to begin, but soon moved up into a handy position and literally nnx>Hed past the leader* halfway down the straight. He is a bag colt by Beau Pere - from Rose Ray, and ie a first foal, hie dam beinjr by Chief Ruler. Kentucky added yet another placing to a long list. He baa been racing solidly, but always seem* to meet one better. Doria lacked •Painina, weakening over tlie final stage* to be headed out by Kentucky. Absolve showed speed, but faded an soon as they were straightened up. Lambourn was well out of his class.

Not Out, who was unlucky to 'be 'beaten on the final day at Dunedin, was too Folid for the others in the Apprentices' Plate. He trailed Winge of Song and when the latter collapsed at the fake rail went into the lead and stayed there. Not Out should develop into a class sprinter. Hearth was an unlucky runner, being badly away with Scarteen and 'then running a great race for second. Meadow was always in th* picture, and wee Just beaten for second. Then came Serenaita and Lady Tinkle. Veldette's saddle slipped when she wae running tiiird, and ehe went back through t)he field after a couple of furlongs. Winge of Song showed excellent speed, but only for five furlonge, where be tired. Greatford broke a eessamoid bone and had Co be destroyed. Won Attractively. Stencil won the Fitaherbert Handicap nicely from Chary, but the unlucky horee was Shikari, who came witfli a great run on the raita, but had to be pulled right up over the final twenty yards as there was no opening. Aβ it wae he was only a head behind C&ary. Grandora was never in the picture early, but finished on for fourth. Triple Crown and Dou't Forget both faded after having every ctoance. Stencil is a useful filly by Rtilenut from Artistry, and deserved her win as she finished on.

Sir Crusoe carried a eolid weight successfully in the Ruapehu Handicap, holding on to beat the hard-ridden Gold Dale by half a length. The winner should carry on in open class. Phenomenal, always up in or near the lead, held on to be a good third. Sky Limit and Lord Lynn were next. Passenger showed speed, but did not run on.

Sternchase forced his way into the lead half a furlong from home in the Telegraph Handicap, and held on to win narrowly from Black Thread, who lasted long enough to beat Duncannon by a head. Night Eruption led to the straight from Black Thread and Olympus, with Sternchase on the rails, and Duncannon behind him. Duncannon looked unlucky. Amigo and Bronwen were never sighted, while Arvakur began well but ran off the track at the straight entrance. Disdain showed speed, but once again failed to run on. Brunhild put in a late dash for fourth, then came Blonde Princess and Night Eruption. Rakahanga fell soon after passins the post. Counterblast showed up wide out, but did not carry on.

Sleeveless, after being prominent throughout in the Anniversary Handicap, fought on valiantly in the riin home, though she was lucky to beat Haughty Winner, who came with a fast late dash on ' the rails, failing to get up by a head. Yogi, also late on the scene, was half a head further back. Paper Slipper looked

likely after passing the false but his weight told and he weakened to fourth. Baran, Galteemore, Solaria and Flammarion all stopped disappointingly. Neither Dictate nor Flame Queen ever looked likely, while Lady Leigh, did not finish as well as expected. Track conditions were excellent, and there was a record attendance. The gates were more than double that of last Cup day, racebooks selling out long before the first race. In the betting on the cup the totalisator ran out of paper for tickets. The totalisator handled £87,515 10/, against £57,284 on the first day last year, an increase of £30,231 10/. Later results:— WELLINGTON STAKES of £700. Two aud three-year olds. Five furlongs.
