DANGER TO ROADS?
AGRICULTURAL PUNTS. I [ HIGHWAYS BOARD'S VIEW. . GTSBORNE, this day. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) l Xi> rlaxation in the restrictions imposed on the use of bitumen roads by : agricultural plants has been offered by the Main Highways Board, despite a deputation from threshing mill and agricultural plant operators, who nought . additional facilities for the movement ( of their plant from farm to farm over ) sealed highways. The district Public t Worßa engineer, Mr. O. G. Thornton, i advised the Cook County Council that " tlie "board took a serious view of the j possibilities of damage to the roads. s The board considers that the obliga--1 tion is on tlie industry to meet the i situation and help to safeguard these ; investments. How it is done is a mat--1 ter for their concern, but the suggestion ; is made that it might ibe possible to maintain a community lorry for the purj pose of transferring these tractors I from farm to«fann. The board considers ? that it lias been somewhat lenient in i allowing heavy, iron-tyred tractors to move on the bitumen at all, as it is hold . that fully as much damage may occur 1 to the pavement in the cooler hours as f i ill the warmer hours.
Councillors pointed out that ryegrass harvesting is now in full operation and that the whole industry will he brought to a standstill by the restrictions.
