Incomplete reports ehow that approximately 11.>,000,000 dollars were subscribed on the opening day of the war loan. i Referring to the loan "The Times" saysi "There can'be no question of the ability of Canada to carry an internal loan of this magnitude, for the war brings with it a great demand for Canudian foodstuffs and Canadian industrial products," tays a British official wireless message. The bulk of the war loan was taken up by sm«ll subscribers. The largest eo far wan Mr. R. S. Mclaughlin, president of General Motors of Canada, who »»bs«ribed 1,000,000 dollars. Mr. Samuel Bronfman, president of the Canadian Jewish Congress, has issued a message to Jews urging them to help build a Maginot Line on the economic front. Hβ «aid it wan the duty and pririlege of Jews to participate, and contracted their situation with that under Nazi tyranny, where their money was ruthlcusly taken from them. Mr. Bronfman and Mr. B. Aaron have jointly subscribed 500,000 dollars. In Announcing the date nf the offering of the first domestic Canadian war loan last week-end, the Finance Minister, Mr. 11. L. Ralston, said the total would be 200,000,000 dollars (about £40,000,000). It would comprise 3} per cent bonds dated February 1, 1940, to bo sold at par. The bonds would mature in 1052 through * system of annual drawing by lot. They would be at call in five equal sections, beginning on February 1, 1048. Financial circles expected then that the loan would be heavily over-subscribed.
