CONDEMNED.

UNIVERSITY REPORT.

FOREIGN MEDICAL STUDENTS.

" WRONG IMPRESSION."

(By Telegraph.—Press Aesoolation.)

WELLINGTON, this day

There was some outspoken comment at a meeting of the Senate of the New Zealand University on that part of a report of the Dean of the Medical School, University of Otago. which referred to foreign medical practitioner; l . After two speeches had been made in severe condemnation of tho statement in this port of the report it was explained by the Chancellor of the Ota<;o University, Mr. W. J. Morrell, that the report had been drawn up hurriedly by Dr. Hercus, who had recently returned from abroad, and did not convey a correct impression.

This explanation was accepted and the report was sent liack to the medical school for amendment and clarification.

The section of the report giving rise to the discussion dealt with the admission to the medical school of thirteen refugee foreign medical practitioners during the year. The number of foreigners was considered by the University Council to be unduly large and the council had decided not to admit more than three foreigners ill any year and that none should he admitted in the immediate future unless the circumstances were very exceptional.

Mr. S. X. Ziman, of Hamilton, said he thought the Senate should dissociate itself from tin; action taken and call on the medical school to explain the report and action taken. He moved to this effect.

Mr. F. A. d< , la Mare, also of Hamilton, seconding the proposal, said it seemed to him one of the grossest pieces of improper conduct he could possibly imagine.

Mr. Morrell replied that the impression gained from the report l>y Messrs. Zimaii and de la Mare had not much relation to the true farts. On reading the re|>ort again he saw it gave a wrong impression but the Medical School and the University of Otago were not liable to imputation* thrown on them.

Eventually the action above indicated was taken, Mr. Morrell staling that this should bo accepted so that the report could be clarified.
