VETERINARY COLLEGE SCHEME TO COST £70,000. UNIVERSITY SENATE'S VIEW. (By Telegraph.—Tress Association.) WELLINGTOX, this day. Tlie report of the committee appointed to consider the Icrfirability of establishing a veterinary college in the Dominion was before the University Senate yesterday. Presenting the. report, Mr. L. J. Wil«l said tliat at a very conservative estimate the Dominion required 240 veterinary surgeons, including about 40 for in>pectio:ial and research work under the Department of Agriculture. Twelve to fifteen students would be required to pass through the school eni'll year in order to keep up tlie supply. The (Government at present had provided money to send suitable «tiideiit« to Australia to be trained. Tlie cost of tlie building, he set down at £.~>n,ooo to £75.000, with an annual cost for maintenance and payment of lecturers, etc., at £ 10,000. The report suggested that the institution should be connected with a school of agriculture in preference to the medical school. The Chancellor, the Hon. J. A. Hauan. questioned whether it wan a reasonable time to approach the Government on the subject, seeing how scarce money was, although undoubtedly they would like to see the scheme established. Dr. De uha in suggested that they should stress the necessity of the scheme rather than press for its immediate establishment. The Dominion lost annually between £2,000,000 and £4,000,000 through animal disease. In adopting the report the Senate affirmed the principle that a school of veterinary science should be established in connection with an agricultural college.
