MR. NOTLEY RETIRES.

CITY COUNCIL APPROVES.

WARM TRIBUTE BY MAYOR.

The retirement of Mr. P. F. Notley, city valuer and returning officer, was announced at a special meeting of the Auckland City Council this morning.

The Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, said he regretted to receive the resignation, because Air. Xotley liad been a most efficient officer, and the whole of the community could not speak too highly of him. Xo more faithful officer had ever served the Citv Council.

Mr. J. Sayegh said that the people of Auckland had nothing but the highest praise and respect for Mr. Notley and his work. The resignation was accepted, and Mr. Notley was granted six months' leave of absence on salary. Air. Notley is 04 years of age. He came to New Zealand from England in 1901, arriving at Wellington. He was engaged in various occupations for some time, and joined the city staff in 190.'i. when he was attached to the traffic department. He then joined the valuation department, and in 1919 was appointed city valuer and returning officer for the council. Mr. Notley served in the Boer War with the Royal Engineers. He also served in the Great War, and was a sergeant-major in the lath North Auckland Regiment.
