SERGEANT-MAJOR G. HOAD.

Sergeant-Major Ceorge Hoad, D.C.il., lias died in the Veterans' Home, Mount Koskill, at the ase of 73. For 21 years Sergeant-Major Hoad served with the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He took part in the South African War, gaining the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry. Retiring on pension, he came to New Zealand early in 1914 and became a sergeant-major instructor on the permanent staff. When war broke out lie went back to England and, joining his old regime-nt, was appointed sergeant-major of a training battalion. After the armistice he returned to the Dominion and lived on his pension until he entered the Veterans' Home a few years ago. He was not married.
