CHEAPER VEGETABLES.

POTATOES AND ONIONS. PUKEKOHE PRODUCE REPORT. Heavy rain over the week-end gave the ground a thorough soaking and market gardens in the Pukekohe district benefited considerably. Growth will now be accelerated. Supplies of vegetables are already exceeding the demand and a substantial drop in prices has occurred since last week. New season's onions, which are of splendid quality, are not in keen demand and a drop of £5 10/ per ton has resulted. Even at the lower figure business is not particularly brisk. At the moment the future prospects for onions are not encouraging. A further reduction of £2 a ton for potatoes has taken place and lower values are also quoted for other lines. Quotations are, with last week's prices (where available) given in parentheses: — Pukekohe potatoes, 7/ (9/) por cwt; newlocal onions, 12/ (17/6) per cwt; pickling onions, 12/ per cwt; cabbage, 6/ (7/2) per super bag; carrots, 4/6 (6/3) per sugar bag; French beans, 8/ (8/) per sugar bag; swedes, 4/6 (4/6) per sugar- bag; beetroot, 4/6 per sugar bag; green peas, market rates (5/6) per sugar bag; marrows, 7/6 per dozen. Cucumbers and pumpkins while available are not quoted.
