PATRIOTIC SEALS.
LORD GALWAY'S APPEAL.
The appeal which was made by- the Governor-General, Lord Galway, just before Christmas* for the purchase of patriotic seals to provide a special fund for comforts for the troops has had a response of about 50,000 replies. At the end of last week the Patriotic Fund Office in Wellington made a start to open the envelopes and assess the first contribution. It was found that the first l."> 00 envelopes opened produced £320. Replies are still coming to hand from people who had overlooked the matter in the rush of the Christmas season, and it is hoped that the response will eventually reach 100,000 envelopes, as the amount received to the present will fall far short of what was expected.
