LABOURER'S LAPSES.
PROBATION DECLINED. IMPRISONMENT FOR THEFT
"In view of your previous offences I cannot extend probation to you on Lhis occasion," said Mr. J. Moiling, S.M., to George McDonald Hamilton, a labourer of 25, in the Police Court to-day.
Hamilton pleaded guilty to charges of stealing 11/5 in money and a gold locket valued at JE2 belonging to Cornelius Charles Brown, and of mischief by wilfully damaging a gas meter to the extent of 10/.
It was stated by Detective-Sergeant McHugh that Hamilton had been staying at complainant's house. On January 5, during the absence of complainant, he sold 11/5 worth of empty bottlea and did not give him the money. On the same day Hamilton stole a locket from the house. He pawned the locket for 3/, while he also robbed the gas meter in the house. Hamilton was a married man with a wife ajid infant child in Christchurch, where he was wanted on a charge of breaking, entering and theft. He was hard-up and unable to make restitution.
The magistrate, on the theft charge, sentenced Haminton to cne month's imprisonment.
