TIN INDUSTRY.

IMPETUS FROM WAR.

NEW FIELD OPENED.

VM Or MODERN METHODS.

The war has given an impetus to the tin industry,' according to Mr. C. F. Btttcson, a tin prospector from Perak, Malaya, who arrived in the Dutch liner Roggeveen this morning, en route to Sydney on furlough.

Mr. Bat«son said thai the Byrnes restriction scheme was still in force. This was Introduced some years ago with the object of keeping up the price of tin and to protect the small miner who could not produce economically. However, due to the hoavy demands of the war, tho quota had been fixed at 120 per cent, and no company could hold stocks of more than SO per cent of the quarterly quota. *

Tho market was now unlimited, and tho Government had recently opened up for prospect 5000 acres of forestry reserve. Although this was wealthy country and promised good yields, there had been no very rich lields discovered in the last five years.

The main development in the tin Industry at the present time, said Mr. Batesoti, was the building of efficient electric dredges. Where companies were formerly operating three or four steam dredges, they were now using two modern dredges and increasing their output by 100 per cent.
