EQUALLED N.Z. RECORD
AUSTRALIAN HURDLER. BEATS SHARPLEY IN HAWKFB BAY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HASTINGS, this day. The Australian hurdles champion, Sid Stenner, equalled the New Zealand record for 120 yards hurdles (established by P. F. Sharpley in a match race with the Canterbury champion, C. R. Bradwell, at Rotorua three years ago), when he defeated Sharpley and Bradwell at Napier last night.
Stenner made a poor start, knocking down the first hurdle, fyut staged a magnificent recovery and showed brilliant style over the remaining obstacles. Sharpley and Stenner came into the clear together, but the Australian outpaced Sharpley to win by 18 inches, in 15s.
Bradwell finished several yards behind Sharpley.
Sharpley bid fair to lower bis own New Zealand record in the 220 yards hurdles, but slowed up towards the 'finish to complete the course in 255, one-fifth of a second slower than his record established at Dannevirke last year.
Stenner showed good style, but never looked like beating Sharpley.
Bradwell showed improvement, but tired visibly when three-quarters of the course was covered. Eight yards separated Sharpley and Stenner, Bradwell being a further three yards back.
