SUMMER CUP WIN

lILS DE VAALS.

FINE FINISH.

BEAUREPAIRE SECOND

GLADYNEV IS THIRD.

DE FRIEND'S HURDLES

The weather was perfect for the second day of tlic Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting at Ellerslie and again to-day the attendance was large and the course ii» excellent order. The big race of the day, the Summer Cup, resulted in a fine win, after a stirring finish, for Fils de \ aals, a stable-mate of the Auckland Clip winner Cheval de Voice, botji liorse-s being owned by Mr. A. Rowan, of Te Awamutu, and ridden by t.he same jockey, H. Long. The favourite, Beaurepaire, wlio won the Christmas Handicap on the opening day, challenged Fils de \aals and was beaten "by a head, with another consistent horse, Gladynev, a neck away third. The Summer Cup provided a great finish, victory going to Fils de \ aals, who races in the same eolours as Cheval de Volee, who won the Auckland Cup. This three-year-old v.as a good way •back early, but moved up»crossing the top, and was handily placed at the turn, coming through to win nicely. Beaurepaire was also well back when half the distance had been covered, but half a mile from home lie commenced to improve hie position, and coming through on the rails in the straight just failed to head off Fils de Vaals. Gladynev, who won the Te Awa.mutu Cup a fortnight ago, ran right up to that form. He finished a good third. Our Jean was prominent early, but lost her position with half a mile to go. ! Baran and Balinavar lost some ground at the start. Our Jean and Glad.vnev led out from Erlick. Kathbella, Royal Appellant. Paddy the Rip, Spartan, Homily, Baran and King Rev. That was the order as they went out of the straight. Kathbella ran to tlie front before the seven furlong post was reached, with Paddy the Rip alongside her, the pair being followed bv Spartan. Gladynev, King Rev, Royal Appellant, Our Jean, Baran, Homily and Fils de Vaals. Just after passing the six furlong post Spartan took charge from Kathboila, Paddy the Rip. King Rev, Fils de Vaals, who was moving up, Gladynev, Homily. Beaurepaire, who was also coming fast. Royal Appellant and Erlick. Spartan and Kathbella were first into the straight from Paddy the Rip, Gladynev, Fils de Vaals anl Beaurepaire. Fils de Vaals and Gladynev were, just in front at the distance, where Beaurepaire was running through on the rails. In a stirring finish Fils de Vaals got the decision by a head from Beaurepaire, who beat Gladynev by a neck. Homily was fourth, and then came Baran, Erlick, Kathbella, Balinavar and King Rey. The K'ng's Plate.

Beaulivre was tlie first to show out, but Kouneta quickly went to tlie front an<l led along the back from Beaulivre, Oreiio and Beau Vite. Crossing the top Kouneta was out four lengths clear of Beanpartir, with two lengths to Beaulivre aiul Oreiio. while Beau Vite was three lengths away last. Beaupartir and Beaulivre were up with Konneta at the home turn, with Oreiio a length away and Beau Vite still in the rear. Once given his head Beaulivre went to the front to win easily by threequarters of a length from Beau Vite, who beat Beaupartir by a head. Oreiio was another head away fourth, with Konneta last. Beaulivre to-day completed a brilliant 6eries of victories, having won at all nine start* since August. He opened his wfnning score at the Egmont-Wanganui meeting by scoring in tlie Waihau Handicap, won tlie Wanganui Guineas in September, and came north to take the Avondale Guineas. In October he won the Great Xorthern Guineas, and then returned south to capture the Trentham Stakes* and the Harcourt Stakes. At fihristchurch, in November, ho won both the Stewards Handicap and the New Zealand Derby Stakes. The sectional times were:—One furlong, 14s; two furlongs, 25 2-ss; three furlongs, 38s; four furlongs. 4S 3-f)S; five furlongs, 1.4, and the full distance, 1.37.

All go to the Post. Racing opened with the Fermi's son Handicap, in which all the fourteen horses went to the post. The winner was Cornish, ridden by the apprentice Smith, another horse who showed form on the opening day, Meadow, the topweight, getting a good second after making a late run from the rear of the field. All the seven horses carded for the Ponsonbv Hurdle race, faced the starter, the winner turning up in the Gisborne-owned and trained De Friend, which carried the top weight of 12st! As was generally expected the weight-for-age classic, the King's Plate, over a mile, was won by Beaulivre. He jumped away smartly, but was steadied into third place. At the home turn he was right up with the leaders and went on to win very comfortably from Beau Vite, who finished fast on the rails, just heading off Beaupartir and OreJio, this trio finishing practically in line. Beaulivre has an unbeaten record this season, having won nine races in succession. Beau Vite, who raced well in | Australia, was making his first appearance since he returned. He was last all the way till the straight, but then came through on the rails to take second money. Konneta endeavoured to lead all the way, but was done with when the home turn was reached i and finished last.

True to Form. The first day form worked out well in the Fergusson Handicap, for Cornish and Meadow, who had got second 011 Tuesday, fought out the issue, the decision going to the former by inches. Kilcash came from a good way back to 'get third.

When they settled down Cornish was in charge from Buccaneer, Millament, Perillus, .Tea Gong, Lady Fox, Seienata and Great Swoop. Cornish and Buccaneer led across the top from Beeswin", Millament, Sorenata, lea Cong, Meadow and Perillus. There was not much elianare into the straight except that Stylist was showing up wide out. Aleadow then came through and challenged Cornish, and in a good finish Cornish got the verdict by half a head, with Kilca-sh a length and a quarter awav third. Hutana was fourth, and then followed Seienata. Millament, Perillus, Buccaneer, Tea Gong, Stylist, and Lady Fox. Won Easing Up. As they passed the stands in the Ponsonby Hurdle race De Friend went to the front and won casing up. The only time danger threatened was when Glen Abb headed him coming down the hill. The next fence saw Glen Abb come to grief and tlie top-weight had matters all his own way afterwards. Ringshot ran another solid race for second, and would have been closer only for stumbling at the last fence. Inness Lad showed improvement on his recent form. Glen Abb, Inness Lad, Devon and De Friend was the order over the first fence and passing the stands De Friend and Glen Abb were on terms, from Ringshot, Inness Lad. Devon and Chikara, with Little Briton last. There was no change along tho back and Glen Abb ran to the front half a miie from home, but fell at the second to last fence, leaving De Friend in front from Ring.~hot, and this pair was followed round the home turn by Inness Lad and Devon, with Little Briton in the rear. Nothing had a chance with De Friend in the run home and he beat Ringshot by two and a half lengths, with Inness Lad a neck away. Little Briton and Devon were next, Chikara having fallen at the same fence as Glen Abb. Detailed results: — FERGUS SON HANDICAP of £350.
