Ho wn« Owen Trewheela, aged 32, and ho pleaded guilty to the charge.

Moore and Cossill kept him under observation, and saw him taking liets iiikl paying out to the successful punters. When accosted he was found to have* in his possession £2.1 in notes nml £t in silver. He said h« had only tukrn £i> in bete, and that he had come fiom Whangarei and had started bettin,/.
Trpwheela also stated that lie was taking beU for another man, but he wns soon to take all the bets and pay out himself. A married man with two children, Trowlievla was in regular employ men t at the Portland cement works. Trewhcela had not: ing to say except tlmt ho had "never been at the game be I ore."
"Von knew the consequences of bettinp, especially on the racecourse, and yon am in repular employment and had no nwesHity to do this," said the magistrate in fining Trewhcela £50 and costs, in/. Of thU sum £20 is to be paid forthwith, and the balance at the rate of £3 per month.
