RECAPTURED.

ESCAPED PRISONER. RECOGNISED BY WARDER

Raymond Patrick Letton, aged 33, who escaped from the Rangipo prison camp, Tokaanu, on November 5, was recaptured 011 Sunday morning in Kingsland by Constable A. Breed.

Letton was first recognised by a warder who was cycling home after finishing duty at the Auckland prison. On being challenged by the warder, Letton ran away, but was overtaken by ibe prison officer. A scuffle ensued, after which tlie escapee eluded his pursuer and- crossed the railway line towards Sandringliam Boad. While he went to summon Constable Breed, of Kingsland, the warder asked a milk roundsman to keep the fugitive in sijrht. After leap'""- over some fences. Letton ran into Wallers Boad, but later doubled back toward the railway Hue.

Joining the warder in the chase, Constable Breed searched a patch of scrub near the Kingsland railway station. Le'ton was located in the scrub and handcuffed by Constable Breed, who took his prisoner to the city lock-up. Letton previously escaped from the city lock-up early this year when be climbed a water pipe running up a 20ft wall. He was recaptured in Wellington a month later. Yesterday morning, at a special Court held in the police station. Letton appeared on a charge of escaping from lawful custody. He was remanded to appear in the Police Court on December 28.
