VETERAN SALESMAN.

PRESENTATION TO MB. P. MACKIE. A presentation of cuff links, a clock and a reading lamp was made to Mr. Peter Mackie by the combined staffs of the commercial printing department of the "Auckland Star" office, on the occasion of his retirement from the sales staff of New Zealand Newspapers, Ltd. Mr. E. who made the presentation, said that Mr. Mackie was held in high esteem by the whole business community. Mr. Mackie had had, he said, a diverse and. useful career. In his youth he had been a contemporary player among those great footballers, "Barlow" Madigan, "Mother" Elliott,

Fred Murray and Bob Whiteside. "As a dashing three-quarter half a century ago, Mr. Mackie had a flying tackle which never failed," declared Mr. Aklfidge, "and his achievements as a Rugby representative have stood him in good stead all through life. In his work for New Zealand Newspapers for the past 23 years Mr. Mackie has been in the front rank of printing salesmen in Auckland, and his knowledge of the business has been a great asset to the department with which he has been associated." In reply, Mr. Mackie said that life's chief charm lay in the acquisition of friendships. His early experiences had led him to realise that there was nothing like "playing the game," and this he had consistently tried to do. His associations with the "Auckland Star" office had always been of the happiest, and, as he now stepped out of the ranks, he knew he left behind firm friends, Whose regard he would alwavs value. To the younger people present, Mr. Mackie gave a message of endeavour and perseverance, saying that every day fepresented an opportunity to achieve something worth while.
