One of tlie most keenly contested matches of the season marked the final of the Roope Rooster competition at Carlaw Park oil Saturday when Marist defeated Mount Albert liy 13 point*; to 11. They will meet again next Saturday for the champion of champions honour. In the Piielau Shield semi-finals City defeated >sewton and Richmond beat Manukau. Results were: — Marist 13, beat Mount Albert 11. City 21'. beat Newton !). Richmond 20. beat Manukau 16. WIN DESERVED. In a. game which was hard fought all the way. but rarely rose to spectacular heights, City outpointed Newton by the clear-cut margin of 21 points to !». The winners thoroughly deserved their succes-s. for they had territorially the better of the exchanges. At their interval they were behind by four points—Newton at this stage leading by !l points to ."«—but after the change-over they got down to better football and reaped the reward. Newton were given little quarter, and although they fought back gamely they were unable to add to their first spell total. The losers were without the services of several of their most prominent players, and their combination suffered as a result. Their backs were not as thrnstful as usual, but men who gave good accounts of themselves were Brady. Stephens and Kendall. Kempsev. as usual, gave a sound display at fullback. Hehind City's pack Raesheck shaped splendidly. He fed his supports well, and was partictilarly dangerous on occasions in bursts round the serums. Smith. Silva and I'.rassey were a trio of three-quarters who worked with a will from bell to hell, and contributed a good deal to their side's victory. while Whittle, at full-back, did all tli.i't was expected of him. In City's forwards Welincr played a game out of the box. and not only figured in the scoring list but payed the way for another try. Other forwards constantly in the picture were Cillirren and Magee. Hard workers all the way in Newton's forwards were Ginders. Blacklaws and Anderson. For the winners tries were scoretj by Smith. Raesheck. Welincr.
