From the broadcast of a German short-wave station shortly after noon to-day. Mr. E. Greenhaljrh. of 15, Tutanekai Street. Grey Lynn. picked up the dramatic announcement that PilotOfficer Lawrence Hu-rh Edwards, of Patea. Taranaki. was still alive.
First reported New Zewland casualty of the war. Pilot-Officer Edwards was reported missir.fr after the initial Royal Air Force patrol over Germany.
Spluttering static drowned some of the announcement. but Mr. Greenhaljrh clearly heard the missing New Zealander speaking. *'T heard him say he was fit tiiul well and that his only inconvenience was an armed guard." said Mr. Oreenhalfrh. ''He seemed anxious to let Xew Zealand know that he was beins: well treated. He said nothing of the circumstances of liis capture."
To-night (he people with the gl«dde«t hearts in the Dominion will ]*■ Mr. and s ' 9" Edwards, of Patea. the missing officers parents. Pilot-Officer Edwards is known throughout Xew Zealand as an outstanding Rugby footballer. Twentythree years old. he went to England to take up a short service commission in the Royal .Air Force early this year.
