A substantial improvement in the tiuwicial status <>t the Auckland Society ol Aits is revealed in the annual report ot the president. Mr. !\. (). Cross, which will be presented at the annua! meetiic' on Thursday. September ->8. The previous years accounts, it is stated, had caused tn,. council of the society considerable concern. and it was deemed wise "to investigate the position thoroughly.
A complete review of the society's sources of income and its expenditure was made and drnwtic alterations in policy were effected. The result, says Mr. Gross, was that the position improved in eight months to the extent of £200. All arrears of interest and the whole of the principle has now been cleared off one of the society's mortgages. The report states that the society is fortunate in having a mortgagee who has honoured his obligation* without taking advantage of legislation.
Pleasure is expressed at the co-operation given by the City Council in lending the Art Callerv for the annual exhibition, at which attendances increased enorijiously over the totals of previous years. The exhibition loss was much reduced.
Membership. \t/ is stated, now consists of 4'2."> honorary/ 187 working and 15 life members, representing a decrease of one member on last year's total.
