THE "AUCKLAND STAR"

NOTICE TO READERS.

WAR TIME PROBLEMS

Newspaper publishers have as yet no assurance of continuance of the supplies of their raw material—newsprint— which comes from Britain and from both Canadian coasts, the main source of supply being Canada. War conditions have also brought heavy increases in the cost of newsprint. The price is fixed oil the basis of the stanflavd relation of the dollar to the pound, and the recent rise in the dollar rate has meant a very considerable increase in the cost of paper. To this is added higher freights and war risk insurance at the rate of o per cent. The control of shipping through the convoy system ami the requirements of the British Army and the Director of Food Stipplies may result in the serious restriction of supplies. These circumstances demand a reduction wherever possible in the size of the newspaper and a careful check on supplies to newsvendors. All tt-ho wish to obtain the "Auckland Star" regularly are urged to give a definite order either to this office, to the salesman in charge of the distribution in town and suburban areas, or to the bookseller or sub-agent from whom they obtain their paper. Unless this is done there can be no guarantee that the Auckland Star" will be available when required. Street sales will continue as usual. We look confidently to the public tor consideration and assistance in thi* matter. >
