PATRIOTIC WORK.
MEMBERS' ACTIVITIES,
It wa« decided at a meeting of the ladies' auxiliary of the Royal Society of St. George, held in the Penwomen's Club rooms yesterday, that members would carry out patriotic work under the auspices of their own society. The president, Mrs. P. Heath Preest, presided.
It was also agreed to conduct a stall at every meeting of the auxiliary, the proceeds from which would be used for patriotic work. The members would both equip and 'buy from the stall for that purpose.
A knitting and sewing circle was set | up yesterdaj', the members of which will knit socks and scarves and make pyjamas and other clothing for men on ser\ ice. Mrs. C. A. Hankins was elected convener for this circle. Mrs. W. G. Offer was chosen to convene a circlc for the collection of books and other reading matter for the same purpose. r 11 address entitled "Architecture To-day" was given by Professor C. R. Knight. It was built, he said, for the masses and on a commercial basis, a fact which had caused the changes in the architectural forms of the present age. The need for economy prevented the use of decoration, carving or modelling on buildings, while the cost of the installation of labour-saving devices, now regarded as necessities, amain "ave' less money for decorative features. At the moment there is concentration on making the best of fundamentals, and that is why architecture to-day must be of a plain and simple character," the speaker concluded. A brief programme arranged 'by Mrs. F H. Hobday comprised songs by Mrs. Hugh Corbin and recitations by Mrs. F. C. Webster.
