NEW CITY OUTLET.

LOCAL BODIES ACTIVE.

RELIEF OF TRAFFIC,

It is estimated that Auckland's new eastern outlet will, cost somewhere in the vicinity of £250,000, and the need for urgent action was submitted bv a deputation which waited on the council of tlie Automobile Association last evening. The deputation consisted of Mr. E. V. Blake, chairman of the Auckland Town Planning Institute. Mr. H. Turner, of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, and Messrs. H. Kayes and G. T. Murray, of the Remuera East Ratepayers' Association.

The route suggested was 4J miles, running from the waterfront road to a point beyond Otahuhu.

It was suggested that such an outlet had been discussed during the past 10 years. The congestion of traffic between the City and Otahuhu had increased, and members of the deputation were emphatic that it was time something was done to relieve it. State housing was now impinging on the ares- over which the proposed road should go, and it was urgent that arrangements should be made to secure the land necessary for the road. The road's actual construction could be considered at a later date. The travelling time between Auckland and Otahuhu would be halved. After the president, Mr. F. G. Farrell, had given an undertaking that the present scheme would receive full consideration by the Automobile Association the deputation's plans were referred to the service committee for a report Mr. Farrell said the association was determined to support the scheme for an eastern outlet which it considered best from all aspects.
