WARTIME SPORT

On In N.Z.—Off In England T® latest Press Association in connection with wartime sport:— In response to inquiries from affiliated unions as to whether games which have been scheduled for this season should be carried on in view of the international situation, Mr. S. S. Dean, chair' man of the executive of the New Zealand Rugby Union, was in contact with the acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser, yesterday. Mr. Fraser assured Mr. Dean that it was the desire of the Government that all sports programmes should be carried out in the meantime. All matches scheduled to take place this season will be played. The New Zealand Rugby League team, now at Harrogate (Yorkshire), is returning home as soon as possible, unless war conditions permit an early resumption of its fixtures. The Australian Rugby Union team will return to Australia from England (without having taken the field there) as soon as ships are available. This decision follows a complete cancellation of sport throughout Great Britain. The West Indian cricketers left England for the Islands, via Canada, nine days ago. Other tours cancelled are: M.C.C. visit to India in October, English women cricketers for Australia and Commonwealth women's hockey players for Britain.
