POACHING NATIVE BIRDS.
RAIDS AT WEEK-ENDS. Captain Sanderson, president of the Forest and Bird Protection Society, in reply to Mr. R. D. Campbell. Conservator of State Forests, Auckland, writes: — ''Mr. Campbell seem< to have rend more into the complaint about poaching in the Puketi State Forest than was put into it by the Forest and Bird Protection Society's correspondent. Tt was distinctly staled that tlie offenders were outsiders, whose raiding was done mainly during week-ends, when the roadmen were absent. "The s&ciety recognises that the native birds have good protectors among officers and employees of the Stale Forest Service, but the scope of ranging is not wide enough to detect much of the poaching of pigeons, extensively practised in Northland and other districts. "Despite prohibiting against the use of roads into State forests, the usual experience is that law-breakers watch for opportunities to take advantage of easy aece-.- to the haunts of pigeons. It's a case covered by the proverb: 'Opportunity makes the thief.'"'
