Fuehrer Meets Powers' Envoys
TALKS IN BERLIN Reported Proposals Made To Britain COMMONS MAY MEET (United Press Association.—Copyright.—Rec. 12 noon.) LONDON, August 25. It is confirmed that Herr Hitler received Sir Nevile Henderson. British Ambassador, together with the French Ambassador, in the presence of Herr von Ribbentrop. He also received the Italian and Japanese Ambassadors. It was learned in London that Sir Nevile Henderson called on the Fuehrer at Herr Hitler's own request, but the meeting was not then officially confirmed. Sir Nevile Henderson is flying to London to report on the conversation with Herr Hitler. It ia slated in Government circles that Sir Nevile Henderson bear* proposals requiring an answer from Britain, which may necessitate a summoning of Parliament on Monday. The German official news agency stated that by reason of the tense situation the solemn ceremony arranged for Tannenberg will not take place. The ceremony was to commemorate the defeat of the Russian forces in 1914. Herr Hitler was reported earlier to be in high spirits. He was putting the finishing touches to his Tannenberg speech, in which it was believed that he would state his case on Sunday and act on Monday, but others considered he would issue an ultimatum clearing up the situation at the party congress. There was just a chance he might have announced a peace offer necessitating radical changes all over the world. The British Associated Press Berlin correspondent says that sources close to Field-Marshal Goering declare that M. Molotoff has already embarked on efforts to induce Poland to agree to an eleventh-hour solution. It is reported that because of this Herr Hitler has withheld his hand at a moment when everyone expected an invasion. An indication of how close Germany was to action last night is provided in the revelation that every radio station suddenly switched on to an identical programme which is done only when most important pronouncements are imminent.
