January 20.—German-Polish agreement. June 14. —Hitler and Mussolini meet at Venice. June 30.—"The Thirtieth June" executions in Germany. July 25.—Chancellor Dolfuss of Austria murdered. Succeeded 'by von Schueehnigg. August 2.—On death of President von Hindenburg, Hitler becomes Chancellor and Fuehrer. 1935. March o.—Announcement of creation of German Air Force. March 16. —Conscription reintroduced. May 2. —Franco-Soviet Pact signed. May 6.—Czechoslovakia-Soviet Pact. June 18.—Anglo-German Naval Agreement. October 2. —Italy invades Abyssinia. November 18. —Sanctions applied against Italy. 1936. March 7. —•Rhineland rcoccupied. May 9.—ltaly annexes Abyssinia. July 17.—Outbreak of Spanish Civil War. August 24.—Gorman military service increased to two years. 1937. • January 2.—British-Italian "gentleman's agreement." February 17.—British rearmament scheme. 1938. February 21. —Mr. Eden resigns the Foreign Secretaryship as a. result of a "fundamental difference" with Mr. Chamberlain over the latter's method of dealing with the authoritarian States. March 12. —Germany annexes Austria. April 10. —Daladier Ministry formed in France. September 29. —Munich agreement. September :>o.—Polish ultimatum to Czechoslovakia. October 1. —Herman troops begin occupation of ceded areas of Czechoslovakia. October 2.—Polish troops occupy Tcsehen area. October o.—Hitler in a speech at Saarbrucken admits that "at the beginning of the year'' he had decided "to lead back into the Reich 10,000.000 Germans who stood outside." At Berchtesgaden on February 12 he had promised Herr von Schuschnigg to respect the integrity and independence of Austria. On March 11 and 12 he had given similar assurances to Czechoslovakia. 1939. March 13. —Germany virtually annexes the remainder of Czechoslovakia.
