TURNING THE WHEEL.

Tension along the Polish frontier is . likely to rise and fall as frontier crises develop unless and until some form of negotiated settlement of the Danzig problem is arrived at. Early this week, when HenHitler, Herr von Ribbentrop and Count Ciano met, the pressure eased because the Axis Powers showed some anxiety to discuss proposals which would at least have the effect of determining the minimum acceptable to the Poles and tfce strength of the possible opposition. Now the position has changed again and feeling has flared up as a result of the action of the Poles in arresting a number of the Young German party in Silesia, including their leader, who has since been released. The Poles have taken this means of impressing on the Germans that they are not prepared silently to acquiesce in disruptive campaigns within their own frontiers and that they will not fall as easy a victim as Czechoslovakia to the enemy within the gates. The status of Danzig is capable of improvement and tjiat improvement can be wrought without recourse to war, unless the German war lords are determined to make it.
