Among the northern tribes of ancient Europe it was customary for newlyweds to drink metheglin, or mead, during the month after their .vedding, As the beverage was made from honey, the term honeymoon, or the obsolete "honeymonth," arose. Now, as then, the term is applied to the period immediately following the marriage ceremony although lit is sometimes applied to the wedding Itrip iteelf.
