PROTECTION SOCIETY.

AN ACTIVE MONTH.

CARE OF YOUNG MOTHERS,

Mr. Dawson Donaldson presided at the monthly executive meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children. Members of the committee present were: Rev. Father Colgan, Rev. W. Jellie, Rev. J. Hiddlestone, Hon. Bernard Martin, Sister Esther, Sister Ivy Jones, Adjutant Baird, Mrs. Preston Chambers, Mrs. C. G. Simpson, Mrs. E. W. Moore. Mrs. R. Bloodworth, Mrs. W. Bremner, Miss L. Tuke.

Detailed reports of the 131 cases dealt with during July were presented by the secretary and inspector, showing that there had been 73S office interviews, 60 visits to homes and institutions, as well as seven attendances at the Supreme, Magistrate's and Children's Courts. Thrse hundred and sixty pounds had been handled as maintenance money for clients during the month. The society's solicitor had dealt with Jo cases, and had been successful in obtaining a number of Court orders for maintenance.

Gift to Society. Great appreciation was expressed to Miss Wood and the Happiness Club Tor their generous offer to allocate the' sum of £25 for a gift to the society. As an important part of the society's work is connected with young mothers, both those who are married and in unfortunate circumstances, and those who, being unmarried, have the whole responsibility of providing for their babies, the executive decided to accept the gift on their behalf. The society arranges for maintenance for the baby, to be paid bv the responsible person if paternity can be proved, and in addition it likes to help the mothers with an outfit of baby clothes.

A letter has been sent to Miss Wood conveying the thanks of the executive to the Happiness Club for their sympathetic interest in the work of the society, and suggesting that a supply of first layettes, consisting of napkins, gowns, barras, and vests for cases where little babies are unprovided for would be the most useful form of gift to take.
