BOOKMAKING CHARGE.
MAORI BEFORE COURT.
A plea of guilty was entered by a Maori, Jack Ra,ngi, aged 4~>, married, when lie appeared at the Onehimga Police Court this morning sharped with carrying on the business of a bookmaker, and also with being drunk and disorderly, Sergeant S. A. Brown said the accused was arrested yesterday afternoon on the second charge by Constable L. Morgan, and when searched at the police station ho was found to be in possession of bookniakinjr material. Accused told the presiding justices, Messrs. A. J. Pople and F. C. Soar, that he had been book making to .moment his income in order to keep his fmnily. On tlie first charge lie \ra* lined CIO, or two weeks' imprisonment, and 20 shillings or 48 hours' on the second charge. The bookmaking material was ordered to be confiscated.
