VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND.
HARDWOOD TRADE AFFAIRS,
To further relationships between Xew Zealand and Xew South Wales on matters affecting the hardwood timber trade, two officials of the Xew South Wales I orestry Commission are at present on a visit to the Dominion. Xow in Auckland, tiiev are Mr. R. A. Cookchief timber inspector to the commission. and Mr. H. H. Rose, one of the inspectors. $.
The commission periodically sent, officers to Xew Zealand to advise hardwood consumers on questions of the species of timber best suited to their various requirements, Mr. Cook explained to-day. It had been found that these visits were of great benefit to both' .ew Zealand and New South Wales since many of the doubts re»ardina quality and various other features which existed in the minds of s»me of the users of New South Wales timbers were being gradually eliminated. The present visit would extend over four or live weeks, Mr. Cook said, and would coyer both the North and South Islands, involving contact with various Government Departments and power boards, who are important consumers of haidwoods in the form of poles, piles girders, sleepers and sawn timber. For many years past the bulk of New ZeaWif BUp , phes °f these forms of timber has been drawn from Xew South Wales i Cook mentioned that the timber* classed as hardwoods included ironbark" grey gum, white mahogany, tallow wood' grej box and blackbutt, and these species were renowned for their great strength and durability , „ f , Supplies for Xew Zealand were subjected before shipment to inspection by officers of the Forestry Commission.
