HATS OFF.

Some time ago a big city business house asked gentlemen to give up the habit of removing- their hats when sharing their lift with ladies. With the exception of some chivalrous men of a past generation, this is becoming increasingly the custom. But is it not possible that a small act of deference to the mothers and sisters of the city may be of a really psychological value? If so can we afford to scrap it? It lias always seemed to the writer a rather fine gesture on the part of the Auckland men to thus recognise the presence of the splendid women of our time. Surely we may be permitted to dispense with "strictly business" for three minutes in the transient lift drawing room, thus leaving upon the business a sense of gentle courtesy amid the rush and hustle of the day. EVERYDAY PSYCHOLOGY.
