Only Nine Remain In Steeplechase At Christchurch

Though only nine remain in the Grand National Steeplechase, to be run at Riccarton next Tuesday, there is material among those paid up for to provide an interesting contest.

Originally 25 were nominated, but at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting last Saturday week Black Banner injured himself, and Pandine did not enhance his chances by his display in the Hunt Cup. so ho is in tlie Kntield Steeples. At Riccarton nn Saturday Power Chief met with fatal injuries, while Burwood broke down, and this accounts for those for whom final payments were not made.

At the Hunt fixture Padishah won tin' FTnincliy Steeplechase in surli brilliant style that lie quickly advanced himself t«i first favourite. He has schooled excellently in the meantime, particularly yesterday afternoon, and it look* as though lie will see a short price on the day. Krinatiou. the topweight, has won the Wellington Steeplechase, and at the last Grand National meeting, after falling in the llraiiil National Steeplechase. ran fourth in the Grand National Hurdles on the second day. while on the concluding day he failed to get into the money in the Sydenham Hurdles, and later in the day came out to win the Lincoln Steeplechase. He has to he considered. Survoy. the hero of the Great Northern Steeplechase and the Wellington Steeplechase, would not increase his admirers by his mistakes yesterday and to-day. hut the "round was greasy, and any horse is liable to slip when taking off. He fell at Ellerslie prior to annexing the bin; jumping event there in June, but that did not stop him from winning. He will have support. Slayer, after going well for a good portion of the distance in the Wellington Steeplechase last month, when he fell, won two steeplechasers at the meeting, and was third in the Homebv Steeplechase at Hiecarton last Saturday. He is a possibility. Cottingham accounted for the Grand National Hurdles last August", and he gave an impressive display when he ran second to Padishah last Saturday. He should again go well. A trio that may be in demand is, Padishah. Siirvnv and Krinatiou.

Winter Cup. Catalogue, who has top weight in the Winter Cup, has no recent form u> his credit. However, the fact that lie has won the two previous contests for this event will entitle him to consideration. On Trentham form Majority is sure to be in demand, for he beat a strong field there last month over six furlongs with 10.1 on his back. He has always been staying on in his races, and the extra distance is unlikely to trouble him. Dungarvan will need to improve to win, and Black Thread, Haughty Winner and Nightcalm appeal much more. They are proved gallopers and capable of running a fast mile. Silver Streak does not appeal a« strongly as Alma, who was finishing on in third place to Nightcalm and Haughty Winner in the Brabazon Handicap last week. Lady Montana will not be troubled by the distance, and is well seasoned. This also applies to Trench Fight, a brilliant miler when in the mood. Dictate may not be quite ready to see out a fast run mile journey, but Fleet Street is one of the most consistent |>er formers in the race, and displayed excellent form at Trentham last month. Lord Cavendish has won lip to seven furlongs in open company, and he is expected to run a great race in this event. Spanish Lad failed in the Brabazon Handicap, in which he U stated to have had every chance, and he will have to do a lot letter in order to beat the stronger opposition next week. Settlement was successful over a mile and 35yds at the South Canterbury meeting recently, and is a possibility. Night Dress has a good reputation down South, and has won several times in less pretentious company. Roy Bun has shown good form during the last few months, and is one of the most likely of those on the minimum. Waitaka and Ruling Spi may find the class too good, though the latter accounted for a good field over seven furlongs at Marton last mouth. Among those that appeal at this stage are: Haughty Winner, Majority, Alma, Nightcalm, Black Thread and Lord Cavendish. The Hurdles.

The most notable defection from the Grand National Hurdles, to be run next Thursday, is Peter Beckford. but he is in other events at the meeting. Charade, who won the Great Northern Hurdles, still retains her position of top weight. and by the manner in which she ha* schooled since her arrival at Riccarton she will again have to be seriously considered. Padishah. Erination and Survoy are all engaged in the big steeples and they will have to tie considered if started here. The first-named, who scored last year, is the prime fancy for the double, but no horse has yet accomplished the feat of winning the two events at the same meeting. King Revdid not impress at the Christ-church Hunt meeting, but by the manner in which he schooled yesterday he should make an improved showing. Aussie Ra won the Longbeach Hurdles at Christchurch last Saturday, while Travenna and Recollection followed him home. Aussie Ra has won at both his starts over hurdles and he promises to again give a good account of himself, while the other pair are not without prospects. Agog went badly when schooled yesterday, while Disturbed has shown good form in the Taranaki and Wanganui districts and was third in the Winter Hurdles, two miles and a quarter, to Curie and Ellanui at Trentham last month. Ellanui has also been paid up for and in addition to being placed at Trentham over hurdles won a highweight handicap there. He is a likely lightweight. Silk Sox and Dividend look the best of the others. Some who may he in demand just now are:—Aussie Ra. Padishah. Charade, Travenna, Survov and King Rev.
