MISSIONARY COUNCIL.

Nearly ."SOO delegates rrom 70 nations and areas attended the sessions of the world conference of the International Missionary Council at Tauiharaiu, Madras, in December, 1938. said the Bishop of Aotea-Koa, the Kt. Kev. F. A. Bennett, in a lecture upon the conference to a large audience in the St. Sepulchre's Hall last evening. Bishop Bennett, who took part in the deliberations as representative of the New Zealand Anglican Board of Missions, emphasised the remarkable unifyingpower of the Christian Faith evident at the conference. The bishop was struck by th> fine scholarship and high character of the Chinese delegates. He said that tbx famous Japanese evangelist, Dr. Toyohiko Kagawa, was evidently heartbroken over what his country was doing in China. Stern Government warnings had prevented him from saying anythingabout it directly, but he said that' Christ had died for sinning nations as well' as individual wrongdoers, and prayed that God might forgive his country. Dr. Kagawa was almost overcome with emotion as he had said this. Bishop Bennett illustrated his lecture with lantern slides.
