The Little People.
Do you believe in fairies? Sir James Barrie, that whimsical father of "Peter Pan and Wendy," tells Tie that "when the first bnby laughed for the fir»t time ite laugh broke into a thousand pieces, and they all went skipping about, and that wa« the beginning of fairies." You may have your private opinions on the matter, but it is very certain that people did, and still do, believe in the existence of the "little people." In Ulster the peasantry on a day of mingled rain and sunshine sometimes said: "The good people are baking today," alluding to the unlimited supply of water for the purpose of moistening the flour, and tile sun heat for baking the fairy dough. "Sheeaiins" or fairy mounds are met with in groat profusion, particularly in the west of Ireland; in fact, their number would lead one to believe that some part* of the country must have been at one time more thickly peopled with fairies than with human beings.
