FRENCH CLUB.
FESTIVAL CELEBRATED. NATIONAL DECORATIONS. To celebrate the French national festival, members of the Auckland section of I'Alliance Francaise (The French Club) met last night. The function was held in the Catholic Women's League rooms, where special decorations in keeping with the occasion were arranged. Proceedings opened with the ringing of the "Marseillaise." Blue, white and red lights were suspended from the ceiling in the dance room, while pennants decorated the walls. The French flag had pride of place, while on either side were the Union Jack and the New Zealand flag. Iu the lounge, where bridge was played, bowls of winter flowers added brightness to the scene. On arrival the gueets were received by the president. Mr. A. Thomson, and the vice-presidents. Madame M. F. Foley and Madame V. Hall. Madame Foley was in a frock of black crepe suede and Madame Hall wore black luce with shoulder flower. The following committee assisted: —Mrs. Briscoe. wearing a frock of black crepe with floral coatee; Ann Quayle, midnight-blue floral I'hilVtiit; Wiss Fordyce, rose-pink taffeta; MUs Itose Alliim. black georgette with sequin embroideries; Mademoiselle R. Francis, deep blue georgette; Mrs. S. If. V. Hainlin. Mr. M. P. F. Egan, Mr. W. L. Ban-. Mr. B. I. Fulton and Mr. 11. W. James. Tlie president, in a short address in French, outlined the significance of the occasion. He spoke of the Bastille as the symbol of despotism, and the celebration of its fall as tvpical of joy in the liberation of a nation front tyranny. The victims of oppression in all nations, lie said, might derive hope from such a triumph of justice. Reference was made to the friendly relations existing between France and Britain.
