DEFEATING THE LAW.j Suspension Of Immigration To! Palestine. h RESULT OF ILLEGAL ENTRIES, j British Official Wireless. j I RUGBY, July 13. I The extent of illegal Jewish im-; < migration into Palestine has forced/ Britain to decide to suspend ordinary , ' immigration for the next quota period' 1 (from October 1 to March 31). This 1 decision was announced in the House ' of Commons by Mr. Malcolm Mac-' . Donald, Colonial (Secretary. j ' Mr. Mac Donald said: "The Govern- 1 nient announced its readiness to facilitate the immigration of Jews into ! Palestine up to a total of 7.1,000 during' the live years from April 1 last. We were particularly anxious to help the settlement of Jewish refugees from Central Europe, and special provision was therefore made for the admission of these. "But during the last few months there have been organised attempts to' defeat the proper regulation of immigra- ! tion by traffic in illegal immigrants.' Since many of these illegal immigrants j are Jews from Poland and Rumania,' the movement even threatens to some I extent our effort to help refugees. The ' British Government is determined to' prevent this attempt to defeat the law ! ot Palestine—an attempt which in anv ! case is perpetuating bitterness in that j country. j "The numbers of illegal immigrants! who remain in Palestine are being i deducted from future quotas of 'legal' immigrants. These numbers have been J such lately that I have now authorised | the High Commissioner to announce! that no immigration quota will be issued for the next quota period, that | is, for the six months from October 1 | to March 31. I
"Whether there will be a resumption of immigration quotas after that date must depend upon the circumstances then prevailing regarding illegal immigration."
